Should Drapes Touch the Floor? (And Other FAQs About Drapes)

Custom drapery is a gorgeous addition to any home. Of course, as with any design investment, you probably have a few questions. For example, should your drapes touch the floor? What’s the difference between curtains and drapes? How far off the floor should drapes be?

These are all understandable questions to have, and to help you get started on your window treatment journey, our Blinds 'N' Express team answers these questions and more.

What is the Difference Between Curtains and Drapes?

So, what is the difference between curtains and drapes, anyway? Though their names are often used interchangeably, curtains and drapes are two distinct window treatments. Curtains are usually made from lighter, unlined fabrics for a casual appearance and reliable light filtration.

Conversely, drapery comprises thicker, lined fabrics that provide a more elegant look and superior light control, insulation, and even noise control.

Should Drapes Touch the Floor?

For spaces with high ceilings or formal rooms, curtains should generally touch the floor. This look creates the elegant aesthetic homeowners love about drapes and can make your windows and the room they’re in appear larger.

However, drapes that skim the floor can frame your window beautifully for a more tailored look. Regarding how far off the floor should drapes be, we recommend leaving a ¼ of an inch to a ½ of an inch of space for a polished look that doesn’t gather too much dust.

How Do You Choose the Right Length?

Typically, drapes are either puddled, floor-length, slightly floating, or sill-length. Puddled and floor-length drapes are excellent for rooms with high ceilings or formal spaces. Slightly floating or sill-length drapes are perfect for modern homes, shorter windows, or spaces that see frequent foot traffic, and this can help prevent dirt and grime buildup.

To accurately measure the fabric length needed, measure from the top of the curtain rod to your desired length. Remember that rings and pleats can add extra inches, so don't forget to factor those in.

What Are Your Rod Mounting Options?

Rod placement can entirely change a room's aesthetic. For example, mounting the rod just above the window provides a casual look, while hanging it closer to the ceiling can make the room and window feel taller.

For wide windows, we recommend extending the rod several inches beyond the frame so that the drapes don't block natural light when opened.

How Do You Make Drapes Last Longer?

To maximize the lifespan of your drapes, it’s best practice to vacuum, dust, or wash them regularly. Wiping your mounting rods frequently also helps prevent debris buildup, which can damage the fabrics. For sunny rooms, liners can protect your drapes against UV damage.

If you place drapes in a room with a lot of action, such as kitchens, playrooms, and living rooms, we suggest hanging the curtains slightly off the ground to avoid spills or damage.
